Using Photoshop, I created four simple pixelated drawings that had slight variations to each of them with the intention of creating a gif animation when compiling them together. An artist can best apply this technique by making small changes in each drawing so when they are all put together, the gif animation flows and is not choppy. This skill can be carried further by creating stop motion animation with real life objects. The concepts remain the same- small changes in movement compile together to create an animation. This modification in materials used brings technology back to its root definition of "the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes" by utilizing the understanding of how animations work and applying a computer based skill to real life materials, and back to computers again. A redefinition sprouts here as a task that was previously impossible is made possible by taking the skills learned while creating a simple gif and applying them to real life materials to create a stop motion animation digitally.
Taking the time to make gif animations or stop motion animations allows the artist to pay attention to details in more depth than ever before. In order for either digital animation process to run smoothly, the slightest of movements must occur within the animations. For my 10 second frame, I had 50 photographs. Taking notice of each detail betters the creator's understanding of objects themselves and redefines the way they begin and carry out projects. Often tedious, but always rewarding, and without a doubt adds incredible amounts of appreciation to the effort and thought behind every work of art- digital or traditional.
